Why a membrane loses power when it dries out
The SPE/PEM membrane inside your Hydrator Max needs to stay wet to conduct. It works by moving hydrogen ions through a thin polymer layer, and that layer has to be saturated with water to do it. Leave the bottle empty on a shelf for a few weeks and the membrane loses moisture from the inside out.

How long before it actually matters
Short gaps do not do much. A membrane that sat dry over a weekend trip will usually hit full PPB on the very next cycle, no extra steps needed. It is the longer gaps that build up a moisture deficit.

The soak procedure
This takes about half an hour and needs nothing but the bottle and RO or distilled water.
- Fill the chamber to the fill line with room-temperature RO or distilled water. Do not use hot water.
- Screw the base on but do not start a cycle yet.
- Let it sit upright for 20 to 30 minutes so the membrane can reabsorb moisture.
- Run a normal cycle. Discard this first batch if the bottle sat idle for more than three months.
- Run a second cycle and drink normally from there.
Signs the rehydration worked
Check your PPB reading on the second cycle, not the first. If it is back in the normal range for your unit, you are done. If it is still low after two cycles, the issue is probably scale on the electrode rather than a dry membrane, and citric acid descaling is the next step.
Keeping it from happening again
- Store the bottle with a small amount of water left in the chamber instead of bone dry, if you know you will not touch it for a while.
- Run one cycle every week or two even if you are not drinking from it, just to keep the membrane conditioned.
- If you are heading out of town for over a month, do the pre-trip soak the day before you leave so it is ready when you get back.
FAQ
Can I use tap water to rehydrate the membrane?
Stick to RO, distilled, or filtered water for the soak and for cycling. Tap water carries minerals and chlorine that the generator was not built to electrolyze directly, so save any mixing for after the cycle finishes.
Will a dry membrane eventually stop working for good?
Not from drying alone. A membrane that has simply lost moisture recovers with a soak. Permanent decline happens from cycle count over years of use, which is a separate wear pattern with its own signs.
Is it normal for the first cycle after storage to smell different?
A faint smell on the very first cycle after long storage is common and usually clears by the second cycle. If it persists past two or three cycles, descale the base and try again.
How often should I run the bottle if I am not drinking hydrogen water daily?
Once a week is enough to keep the membrane conditioned without wasting water. It does not need to be a full drinking cycle, just enough to keep the internal components wet.
