Why calcium scale builds up on the plates
Every water source except pure RO or distilled carries dissolved minerals. When you run tap or spring water through the electrolysis chamber, calcium and magnesium ions do not get consumed by the reaction, they just get left behind on the platinum-plated electrode.
It is the same reason a glass shower door fogs up with white spots in a hard water house, or a kettle element crusts over after a few months. The water leaves, the minerals stay behind on whatever surface it touched.
Over weeks that residue hardens into a white crust. It does not damage the plate directly, but it does insulate part of the surface, so the generator has to work harder to hit the same PPB.
Scale is a water problem, not a manufacturing defect.
How often to descale, by water source

If you do not know your water hardness, look at your kettle or coffee maker. Crusty heating elements usually mean hard water and a shorter descale window for your bottle too.
The descaling steps
Keep a small bag of citric acid powder next to the bottle so the whole thing takes five minutes instead of becoming a chore you keep putting off. I do mine on a Sunday, same time I clean the coffee maker.
- Mix one to two tablespoons of food-grade citric acid into the chamber with warm (not hot) water.
- Let it sit for 15-20 minutes without running a cycle.
- Swirl gently, then empty and rinse the chamber three times with clean water.
- Run one plain cycle with RO or distilled water and discard it before drinking normally again.
Signs you waited too long
- PPB readings dropping even though the bottle is otherwise working fine.
- A visible white ring or film when you look down into the chamber.
- Cycle time getting longer for the same water volume.
- A faint mineral smell right after a cycle that was not there before.
None of these mean the unit is broken. They mean it is time for the descale routine above, and readings typically return to normal within one to two cycles afterward.
I would rather a customer descale a week early than wait until the plates look visibly crusted. Catching it early keeps the soak short instead of turning into a longer scrub.
FAQ
What happens if I never descale?
The plates keep accumulating crust and PPB output drifts down over time. It is a gradual efficiency loss, not a sudden failure, but it is easy to avoid with a quick citric acid soak on a schedule.
Can I use lemon juice instead of citric acid powder?
Fresh lemon juice contains citric acid but also pulp, sugar, and inconsistent concentration. Food-grade citric acid powder, sold cheap at any grocery or homebrew store, gives a predictable result.
Does descaling wear down the platinum plating?
No. Platinum is chemically resistant to mild acids like citric acid, which is part of why it is used on the electrode. The acid dissolves the mineral crust, not the metal underneath.
Will switching to RO water let me stop descaling entirely?
Close to it. RO water has almost nothing left to deposit, so scale buildup slows to a crawl. Most RO users only need to check the chamber every couple of months rather than on a weekly schedule.
