Why scale forms in the first place
Every time you electrolyze water that carries dissolved calcium or magnesium, a small amount can precipitate onto the plates. It is a slow process, one cycle does nothing visible. A few months of hard tap water is a different story.
Scale is not dangerous, but it insulates part of the electrode surface. Less exposed plate means less current gets to the water, and your peak hydrogen output drifts down.

How to run the citric acid descale
- Empty the chamber completely.
- Fill with warm (not hot) water, about 80% full.
- Dissolve one teaspoon of food-grade citric acid powder.
- Let it sit 15-20 minutes without running an electrolysis cycle.
- Empty and rinse with clean water twice.
- Run one normal cycle with plain RO or distilled water before drinking.

What not to use
Skip vinegar, bleach, and dish soap. Vinegar works but leaves a smell that takes several rinses to clear. Bleach and soap can damage the membrane and have no place anywhere near the chamber.
A lot of new users assume they can just run the descale during a regular electrolysis cycle to save time. Do not do that. The citric acid step is a soak, not a cycle, and it needs the current off the whole time.

What to expect right after a descale
Your first cycle after descaling should feel like the bottle did on day one. If output still feels weak, the cause was probably not scale, and it is worth checking battery charge and water source next before assuming anything is broken.
Keep a rough mental note of your descale dates. It does not need to be exact, just enough to notice if you are drifting toward every two weeks in a hard water area versus the monthly baseline most people land on.
A phone reminder on the first of the month works well for most hard water households. It takes less time to actually run the protocol than it does to read this paragraph.
FAQ
How do I know if my bottle needs descaling?
The clearest sign is a visible white or chalky film on the plates, or a hydrogen output that feels noticeably weaker than when the bottle was new. Both point to scale.
Can I use lemon juice instead of citric acid powder?
Lemon juice contains citric acid but also sugars and pulp that can gum up the chamber. Food-grade citric acid powder is cleaner and gives a predictable concentration.
Will descaling damage the platinum-plated electrode?
No. Citric acid dissolves calcium and magnesium deposits without reacting with the platinum plating. It is the descaling method we recommend specifically because it is gentle on the plates.
