Why this warning is different
Most water source warnings are about scale or taste. This one is about pressure, and it matters more. A sealed electrolysis chamber is engineered around a specific pressure range for one gas: the hydrogen produced during the cycle.
What happens inside a sealed chamber
During a normal cycle, the vent is sized to release the small amount of waste gas produced along with the hydrogen. That system is built around plain water. Add pre-existing CO2 pressure and the total gas volume the vent has to manage goes up.
The membrane and seals are not rated for that combined load repeated over many cycles. It is not a one-time catastrophic risk, it is accelerated wear on parts that are supposed to last years.
Think about how the unit is designed. The waste-gas vent is sized around one job: releasing the small amount of chlorine and ozone byproduct from a normal cycle on still water. Give it a second gas source to manage and you are asking it to do a job it was never built for.

Signs you made this mistake
- Fizzing or bubbling that continues well after you would expect a cycle to be quiet
- A hissing sound from the vent that is louder or longer than normal
- Water that tastes flat or off after the cycle, suggesting gas escaped unevenly
- Visible residue or moisture around the vent seal

If a drink has bubbles before you touch it, it does not belong in the chamber.
This is one of the few water-source rules where we would call it a hard line rather than a best practice. Scale and taste issues are gradual and reversible. Pressure stress on seals is not something you want to test repeatedly.
If you already did it once
One accidental cycle on lightly carbonated water is not automatically a disaster. Inspect the vent and seals for anything unusual, and switch back to still water going forward. Repeated exposure is the real risk, not a single mistake.
FAQ
What actually happens if I run a cycle on sparkling water?
The chamber has to manage both the CO2 already dissolved in the water and the hydrogen produced by electrolysis. That extra pressure load is not what the vent and membrane are built for, and it accelerates wear.
Is club soda different from carbonated mineral water?
Not for this purpose. Both are carbonated, meaning both carry dissolved CO2 under pressure before you add them to the chamber. Neither belongs in a PEM generator.
Can I add hydrogen water to a sparkling drink after the cycle?
Yes. Run your cycle on plain RO or distilled water first, then mix the finished hydrogen water into a carbonated drink afterward if you want. The danger is only during electrolysis, not after.
Will a small amount of carbonation void my warranty?
